As the human body ages, its systems begin to break down. Unfortunately and often embarrassingly, this includes bladder control, contributing to a large number of geriatric persons suffering from incontinence.

Incontinence is often ignored and accepted by people suffering with it, in part because it is so commonly accepted as a normal part of aging and in part because of embarrassment. Incontinence at any age, however, can be managed or even cured.

There are several ways to cure incontinence for the geriatric patient, including behavior modification, medication, medical devices or surgery. Consulting a qualified physician is the first step in recovering some control over bladder function. During the process of evaluation and finding the care plan best for each individual, it is important to continue use of incontinence pads and cream or lotion skin protectants.
